The human race has endured numerous crises not owing to its physical robustness but by its mental fortitude, ingenuity, and resilience. Mental well-being assumes heightened importance in the wake of the most recent crisis. Our ability to surmount challenges and adapt to change will determine future success. Concurrently, the shipping industry is confronting its own set of challenges. The unprecedented hardships faced by seafarers, coupled with the formidable task entrusted to shore-based managers, have precipitated a marked increase in mental health ย ย among seafarers. Notably, these issues directly impact the safe conduct of vessel operations and are primarily attributable to the circumstances stemming from the ongoingย COVID-19 crisis.
As the demands on seafarers heighten, there has been a discernible increase in psychiatric disorders within this occupational group in recent years. The compounded challenge arises from the lack of proficiency in administering first aid for mental health emergencies at sea. Identifying symptoms and delivering appropriate support is problematic until the vessel reaches a destination where individuals struggling with mental health issues can access necessary assistance. Therefore, senior officers at sea and shore-based managers must be proficient in addressing mental health challenges. This training program,ย โAdvancing Mental Well-being for Seafarers,โย is specifically designed to equip Marine Officers onboard and Shore Based Managers with the essential skills to bolster the mental well-being of seafarers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE
LO 1: Identify signs of loneliness, fatigue, anxiety, and burnout in the maritime environment, understanding their impact on safety and well-being.
LO 2: Use communication and stress-coping skills to strengthen crew unity and performance in high-pressure seafaring conditions.
LO 3: Respond to mental health crises like suicidal thoughts at sea using CrisisReady strategies to ensure crew safety.
LO 4: Promote psychological safety and inclusion aboard ships to reduce stress and enhance morale.
LO 5: Build a MindGuard personal mental health plan with peer support and health strategies to sustain resilience at sea.
